I am working at SRUC as a plant population geneticist on the broadening of the genetic basis of barley (Hordeum vulgare). This is done in order to deliver sustainable crop outputs in relation to limited nutrient input but also pathogen resistance. I use European landrace and early varieties of barley to screen for traits that can be used in agriculture. Furthermore we have developed multiparental populations to test the effect of adaptation under low input scenarios.

Ruairidh is a potato consultant at SRUC, with research interests in epidemiology and control of potato late blight; integrated control of potato diseases; elicitors of host resistance in potato; optimized efficacy of potato late blight fungicides; integrating control of Alternaria and Phytophthora blights of the potato crop.
Gareth is Service Delivery Manager at James Hutton Limimted. Gareth has a keen interest in developing new analytical techniques and has been involved in analysing blood samples for Selenium (see publications). Future research work aims to look at the uncertainty involved with values approaching the limits of detection on both ICP techniques and the uncertainties of different sample matrices. Gareth has worked for the Institute since 1995 as head of Inorganic analysis within the analytical section specialising in the following analytical techniques:

Mark leads studies in molecular physiology in potato at the James Hutton Institute. His main research has been on understanding the molecular basis of quality and development trains in potato tubers. For SEFARI, Mark is Work Package Coordinator for Crop and grassland production and disease control alongside Alison Lees. His work for SEFARI focuses on genetic diversity and improvement of crops.
Alison is a potato pathologist based at the James Hutton Institute and is a key staff member leading Integrated Pest Management research.
