Soil

Jean Robertson is an Infrared Spectroscopist and Head of the IR Section of the Analytical Group at the Institute. She has worked at the Institute in the IR Section since 2004, becoming head of the section in 2005, which encompasses both the analytical techniques of FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared) spectroscopy and NIR (Near Infrared) spectroscopy. 

Andy is a Molecular Fungal Ecologist at the James Hutton Institute, with a major focus on the roles of fungi in the environment, in particular mutualistic soil fungi that are essential for the healthy growth of most terrestrial plant species. His varied research topics mirror the diversity of fungi as a group and the many functional roles that they carry out in most ecosystems. A key aspect of his work is the detection and identification of fungi in environmental samples.

Andrea Britton is a senior post-doctoral research scientist in the Ecological Sciences Group. Andrea's primary interests lie in the biodiversity and functioning of upland and especially alpine ecosystems, and the changes occuring in these ecosystems as a result of human influences including pollutant (nitrogen and sulphur) deposition and climate change. 

Reza has many years of experience in using different chemometric approaches (PCA,PLS,SVM, etc.) for quantification and discrimination analysis. He has also worked in oil and gas and soil research laboratories and has experience in using variety of vibrational spectroscopy techniques for natural gas,soil and liquid characterisations.

Nikki is an environmental scientist at the James Hutton Institute. Nikki's current research is focused on soil hydrology and its linkage to water quality, quantity and Green House Gas emissions. She is involved in modelling soil erosion at national and catchment scales using Pan European Soil Risk Assessment model, PESERA. She is interested in developing links between soil hydrology and the transport of chemicals and particulate matter both in fragile upland environments and lowland agricultural systems.

Maddy is a soil ecologist working within the Ecological Sciences group at the James Hutton Institute. Her research interests include C and N cycling in soils and how these soil functions can be influenced by microbial communities. Maddy currently works on the NERC funded CZO project Using critical zone science to enhance soil fertility and improve ecosystem services for peri-urban agriculture in China.

Klaus is a researcher in Ecosystem Economics at SRUC, focusing on valuation of natural resources and ecosystem goods and services. His particular research interests include methodological developments in choice experiments and in benefit transfer, the incorporation of risk, uncertainty and ambiguity into valuation methods and contract design for public good provision.

David is a GIS consultant at the James Hutton Institute, His background is in the analysis, creation and management of geographical data and he has worked on the mapping programmes of many countries. He has extensive experience in the use and customisation of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and in photogrammetry and remote sensing.

Allan is a soil hydrologist at the James Hutton Institute with over 40 years experience in soil hydrology, soil survey and soil mapping. A key aspect of Allan's work is in interpreting soils data for a range of purposes and to make it more readily accessible to a wide range of users. His current focus is on estimating and quantifying soil carbon stocks.  Allan is the curator of the National Soils Archive and the lead on the Research Deliverable Soil Management (1.1.4).

Mads is an environmental engineer at the James Hutton Institute with interest and expertise in environmental risk assessment, uncertainty estimation and modelling of environmental systems. Mads has been working with many different types of modelling approaches and has applied them to various environmental problems, including modelling of contaminant fate and transport in soil and groundwater systems, risk assessment of soil and groundwater pollution, and evaluation and spatial mapping of the risk of priority soil hazards.
