New partnership to tackle potato industry challenges

"The large and innovative potato research programmes in Scotland are complementary with the diagnostic, skills and training and consultancy services available across all three partners" The seeds have been sown for the creation of a world-leading potato hub in Scotland, designed to give those working in the £200 million-plus industry instant access to expert advice. The country’s three main knowledge, consultancy and research centres for the crop have joined forces on the project, which is designed to drive innovation and commercialisation. Dr Ruairidh Bain

Ruairidh is a potato consultant at SRUC, with research interests in epidemiology and control of potato late blight; integrated control of potato diseases; elicitors of host resistance in potato; optimized efficacy of potato late blight fungicides; integrating control of Alternaria and Phytophthora blights of the potato crop.

Dr Neil Havis

Neil is Crop Protection Team Leader, wtih research interests in: Epidemiology, life cycle and control of Ramularia leaf spot in barley. Managing cereal and oilseed crops using Integrated Pest Management (including biopesticides and elicitors). Developing new risk forecasts for fungal pathogens and incorporating into disease control progammes. Developing new diagnostic assays for fungal pathogens. Monitoring the development of reduced sensitivity to fungicides in fungal pathogens. Monitoring the ear blight species complex in cereal crops and potential mycotoxin threat. Control of late blight

Dr Ruth Wilson

Ruth is a research assistant in the Social, Economic and Geographical Sciences (SEGS) group. Ruth works on projects about demographic change in remote areas, place-based policy and community resilience. Her current research interests include: Lived experiences of remote, rural and island societies and cultures Community dynamics, identity and belonging The relationship betwen technological and social change
