Developing Crop Yield Forecasting Capabilities in Scotland

A SEFARI Gateway Fellowship Report.

This report details research and technical developments made to enable forecasting of harvest time crop yield as the growing season develops using satellite imagery, data integration and modelling. The aim was to develop crop yield prediction capabilities to enhance the RESAS Scottish Crop Map, and to contribute to improvement and the future direction of this product. The objective was to develop an annual yield prediction model for high profile crops in Scotland.

Measurement of Antimicrobial Usage: What Can We Learn Across Livestock Sectors?

Microbes (e.g., bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungi) can become resistant to clinical or veterinary drugs (antimicrobials) that are used to treat disease. This has major consequences for how microbial diseases are managed and, therefore, how antimicrobial compounds should be used. Measuring antimicrobial usage (AMU) is a way to monitor the amount of medicines/chemicals that enter the food-chain, and the environment and this could help to reduce antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

How to tackle TV interviews – SEFARI Gateway supported training

You know your subject matter inside out and it’s time to share it with the wider public. What better way is there to do that than through broadcast media – the most used source of news in Scotland? But the moment a camera is trained on you, the microphone has been switched on and the broadcast journalist readies to ask the first question, you freeze. It’s hard to even remember your name. It’s a situation we all fear. But it’s also one we can master and turn to our advantage so that we can better share our science and the impact it has.

Leading Ideas Hub 2 - Knowledge Exchange in Practice
