We are currently facing three major global challenges: climate change, biodiversity loss and the development of sustainable food production systems. Ideal solutions to these challenges would be ones that deliver win-wins, addressing at least two of these simultaneously. Our work on understanding the role of biodiversity in crop production systems considers whether such win-wins are possible. For example, can we introduce biodiversity back into crop systems, making such systems more sustainable with concurrent benefits for farmland biodiversity (which has seen some of the most substantial
I am a social anthropologist, with around 10 years of ethnographic research experience based on fieldwork in Ecuador, Peru and the UK. I am currently researching the social, material, and political processes implied by moves towards energy decentralisation and the promotion of greater local participation in renewable energy production in Scotland. My ethnographic work follows three wind energy projects at different scales where relations between humans, wind and technology are being actively (re)negotiated in a variety of experimental ways. One fieldwork site is an off-grid west coast

The highlights within this report emphasize the breadth and depth of this interdisciplinary programme’s contribution to Scotland’s environment, land, agriculture, food, rural communities and economy. Key highlights include wader bird conservation; new findings on tackling soil erosion; enhancing climate change risk assessments for Scottish crop pests and pathogens; the development of a suite of tests capable of detecting the most common infections carried by ticks; new evidence on the health and economic benefits from soft fruits; and new findings for the development and adoption of healthy
