MycoNourish raises funding to improve crop production with innovative customised microbes

"There are countless microbes that have both positive and negative effects on plant growth. Ensuring that crops are paired with the best ones offers a novel way of improving yields, and over 85% of the world’s crop species could benefit from our technology" MycoNourish, an ambitious new biotechnology company and spin-out of the James Hutton Institute, announced today the completion of a £150K funding round led by Techstart Ventures. The funding, combined with a recent £125K Higgs Award from Scottish EDGE, will allow the company to grow the business and release their first two products targeted

Biodiversity conservation and COVID-19: remember links between healthy ecosystems and human wellbeing

"This editorial is the product of discussions among conservation scientists from around the world. Our objective is to highlight the short and long-term consequences of this pandemic for biodiversity and for conservation science" “Society's priorities must be human health and the containment of the COVID-19 pandemic, but we also need to be thinking ahead to the resumption of conservation practice and education. There is an opportunity here to remind people of the links between healthy, resilient ecosystems and human well-being.” That is one of the messages of an editorial co-written by

How can we safeguard biodiversity through values and governance?

Despite many initiatives to safeguard biodiversity, recent analyses and reports show that biodiversity continues to decline at the global level. To change this situation requires appropriate governance mechanisms. Governance is the process of making and applying rules and procedures that (seek to) influence motivations and behaviours. As such, biodiversity governance can be seen as a reflection of particular sets of values that determine what to conserve and where, what to regard as acceptable ways of using and managing land and biodiversity, and how to frame and negotiate trade-offs. In two

New SEFARI case study -"Diversity in the Mix: The benefits of biodiversity for sustainable crop production"

How will farms in the future provide the food, fuel & fibre we need while delivering environmental benefits under the conditions of increasingly variable environmental change? Our latest case study by Rob Brooker highlights whether such win-wins are possible. You can read the case study here. "We are currently facing three long-term global challenges: climate change, biodiversity loss and the development of sustainable food production systems. Ideal solutions to these challenges would be ones that deliver win-wins, addressing at least two of these simultaneously. Our work on understanding the

6th World One Health Congress

The 6th World One Health Congress is the largest One Health event of the year, where experts and researchers from around the world present their latest scientific research. This event has been postponed from June 2020 to October 2020. SEFARI will have a stand presence, so please do come and visit us. More information about the event and how to register can be found here.

A3 SCOTLAND Conference

Industry, investors, scientists and government officials from all over the world will gather in Edinburgh, Scotland's dynamic and stunning capital city, seeking strategic partnerships and to discover the latest in research and development. More details about the conference and how to register can be found here. The full conference programme can be found here. SEFARI will be a sponsor, host a session and have a presence, so please come and see us. The event was postponed in 2021 and is now scheduled for April 2022.

Diversity in the Mix: The benefits of biodiversity for sustainable crop production

We are currently facing three major global challenges: climate change, biodiversity loss and the development of sustainable food production systems. Ideal solutions to these challenges would be ones that deliver win-wins, addressing at least two of these simultaneously. Our work on understanding the role of biodiversity in crop production systems considers whether such win-wins are possible. For example, can we introduce biodiversity back into crop systems, making such systems more sustainable with concurrent benefits for farmland biodiversity (which has seen some of the most substantial
