Application of liming products to raise the soil pH in acidic soil conditions has been practised for thousands of years to maintain or improve yield, as crops respond with increased growth to an optimum soil pH. However, there is a cost for the application of liming products with the emission of carbon dioxide (CO2).
On October 11, 2024, the UN Women published a statement in anticipation of the International Day of Rural Women. As this day approaches, I’ve been reflecting on the narratives surrounding women in rural areas.
Following the success of the first ENRA Science, Evidence and Policy conference last year, the conference returned this year to provide a forum to discuss key cross cutting strategic issues affecting Scotland’s environment, communities and rural economy. In addition to showcasing excellence in Scottish Government funded research, the event facilitates building networks and collaborations across science and policy - vital for effective and timely action for climate change adaptation.
The project began following a previous year’s Royal Highland Show, where SEFARI colleagues such as the Rowett Institute, Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC) and Moredun have presences at the event.

We’re beginning to get a little paranoid at SEFARI HQ. On the day of our first significant set-piece, our launch event, Article 50 was triggered, signalling the start of the formal process for the United Kingdom to leave the European Union. On the day of our second major set-piece, a research showcase event, the Prime Minister called for a general election!
